Description

23 and 25 Market Place is a pair of shops, a dental surgery, and accommodation above, built in the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed of stone rubble with a stuccoed front and has a slate-hung gable end on the left. It features a slate roof with gable ends and a brick stack on the right gable end.

The layout consists of a double depth plan, with shops located at the front left and right, and accommodation situated to the rear and above. The central range may have originally served as offices or domestic space, comprising a two-room double depth plan. The entrance is on the right, leading into a hall with stairs at the rear and a reception room on the front left.

The exterior is two storeys high with an attic and a basement at the rear. The front has a regular four-window arrangement, with painted quoins and a moulded cornice. The ground floor features a 19th-century shop front on the left, complete with corner pilasters, a moulded cornice, and a central entrance flanked by canted shop windows. The central range includes a mid to late 19th-century sash window with the top glazing bar removed, supported by a moulded cornice on corbelled brackets, and a door to the right with a moulded cornice and fanlight. There is a 20th-century shop front on the right. The first floor has four segmental arched window openings with moulded surrounds, supported by moulded corbels, along with a moulded cornice and three gabled full dormers, with the centre and right dormers remodelled in the late 20th century.

The building is largely unaltered from its 19th-century form and is significant for its contribution to the town's character.
