Description

St Ives Junior School is a former Board School built between 1878 and 1881 by Silvarus Trevail. The building is constructed of dressed granite with granite ashlar dressings and features Welsh slate roofs adorned with bands of fish-scale slates and coursed ridge tiles, topped with small terracotta finials over the gables. It consists of three gable-ended parallel ranges connected by linking ranges at the south front. The central range is shorter and has a wider gable, with a porch to the right that includes a small bell tower above. The bell tower has a battered first stage with a gablet and two light lancet louvred bell-openings, along with a moulded string and cornice above, which was originally topped by a slated pyramidal spire.

The central gable features tripartite gothic windows with double-chamfered pointed arches, hoodmoulds, and pierced blind tympana, along with shouldered arch lights below. The flanking gables have tripartite shouldered lights within single pointed arches, also with blind tympana and small shields representing the area. Similar gables are found on the east and west sides. All gables, except for the central one, have barge-boards designed as exposed trusses with braces to the collars and king-posts, and paired wooden brackets instead of kneelers.

The windows on the front linking ranges and at the sides have straight heads with stop-chamfered jambs, some paired with a central mullion. All windows are sashes without glazing bars. The building has a continuous granite weathered cill course and plinth, along with small buttresses with set-offs at the corners and front. Moulded granite ridge stacks with set-offs and weathered caps complete the design. The plans for the school were exhibited at the 1878 Paris Exhibition and later at the International Exhibition held in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia.
