Description

Alderman Proctor's Drinking Fountain is a drinking fountain built in 1872 by G and H Godwin, located in Clifton, Bristol. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style and constructed from limestone ashlar, with marble and sandstone details, sitting on a Pennant stone plinth. The fountain features a three-sided spirelet on Pennant steps, with two-stage buttresses at the corners that contain round red sandstone panels. Open two-centre arches between the buttresses have alternating sandstone and limestone voussoirs, a foliate intrados, and pink marble shafts, all set within weathered gables that include finials and carved shield panels. The three-sided weathered spire has chamfered corners and a finial. Inside, the fountain is vaulted over the three-sided basin and taps, which are surrounded by white marble. This fountain commemorates the presentation of the Downs to the City of Bristol by the Merchant Venturers in 1861 and was moved around 1988.
