Description
The Old Post Office, originally built in 1746 and now serving as offices, was designed by Samuel Glascodine. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and features lateral ashlar stacks, with the roof not visible. It is designed in a Palladian style and consists of three storeys and an attic, arranged in a three-window range. The symmetrical front has a pedimented centre that is set forward, with a plinth, impost band, plat band, and rusticated quoins leading up to an entablature with a cornice and parapet.
The ground floor has semicircular arches with moulded archivolts and keys, modern glazing, and central glazed double doors. The upper windows are adorned with architraves, sill blocks, and pediments on the first floor, featuring horned 6/6-pane and 3/6-pane sash windows, along with a wide dormer. The left side of the building has an 11-window range, while the right side mirrors the front's three-window range, with "OLD POST OFFICE" inscribed in the plat band. To the right, there are four, one, and three windows, with a raised entrance section that is set back, containing a tall doorway with a Gibbs surround, a pedimented first-floor window, and a semicircular-arched second-floor window beneath a cartouche with a festoon. Each side includes windows similar to those on the front.
Inside, the building has been largely remodelled in the late 20th century. The side doorway leads to an open-well stair featuring cast-iron stick balusters, column newels, and a ramped moulded rail. The Old Post Office was designed to complement the Exchange and serves as a balancing pair with No. 56.
