Description

25 and 27 Clare Street is an office building located in Bristol, constructed in 1903 by Oatley and Lawrence. It is designed in the Edwardian Baroque style and features limestone ashlar and red granite, topped with a leaded dome. The building has a double-depth plan and consists of two storeys, an attic, and a basement, arranged in a symmetrical three-sided block with a two-window range.

The facade includes a tall granite plinth with raised bands and banded ashlar above, leading to a moulded band. Each elevation is adorned with paired attached Ionic columns that support an entablature and a modillion cornice, set forward over the columns to form open pediments. The corners are splayed and inset, with a parapet and a balustrade between the pediments, culminating in an attic drum topped with a cornice and a leaded dome featuring a stone finial.

Entrances are located at the left-hand end and the right-hand corner, framed by Tuscan columns that are blocked to the height of the plinth. These entrances have entablature blocks and segmental pediments, with the middle section containing a pedestal and urn, which is missing from No. 25. The lintel features a split key and festoons on either side of the 12-panel double doors. The low basement has segmental arches with tall raised voussoirs, while the ground-floor windows between the columns have raised surrounds that extend through the moulded band, complete with split keys and two raised voussoirs.

The first-floor balconies are bowed above semicircular-arched windows with coved surrounds and large split keys that rise into the pediments, accompanied by festoons. Flat-headed first-floor windows over the entrances and corners also have coved surrounds, and all windows feature glazing bars. The dome is enhanced with semicircular-arched dormers at each corner and panelled leadwork.

Inside, the left-hand entrance hall leads to an open dogleg staircase with column-on-vase balusters, dentil cornices above six-panel doors, and panelled wainscotting with a modillion cornice. The interior design is noted for its sumptuous and compressed style, reminiscent of the Radcliffe Camera in Oxford.
