Description
No. 13 Clare Street is a house that has been converted into offices, dating from around 1770. It was largely refronted in 1896 by W.L. Craik. The building features limestone ashlar and stucco, with a roof that is not visible. It has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall with a three-window range. The symmetrical front showcases a 19th-century ground-floor shop front, which is enhanced by fluted attached columns on pedestals. The left-hand doorway and right-hand end are adorned with square relief grotesque masks, while Ionic columns are positioned between. The shop front includes a 20th-century green marble stall riser and heavy panelled double doors. Above, there are stuccoed pilasters with fluted necks and moulded caps, an entablature, and a parapet. The windows are framed with architraves that have panels set in the lintels, raised cornices on the first floor, and flat aprons on the second. The middle first-floor window features pilaster jambs, and the central second-floor window has incised key shoulders. The windows are fitted with plate-glass sashes. The interior has been largely remodelled in the mid-20th century.
