Description

Numbers 30 and 31 are a pair of attached houses built in 1847 by Charles Underwood, located in Canynge Square, Clifton, Bristol. They are designed in a Neoclassical style and feature a render with limestone dressings, party wall stacks, and a hipped roof made of slate and pantile. Each house has three storeys, a basement, and an attic, with a two-window range.

The entrance front is nearly symmetrical, with shallow projecting wings flanking a deep frieze band and a central pilaster strip. The eaves are boxed and overhanging, and the middle section has an attic storey topped with a shallow pedimented parapet. The wings include ground-floor pilasters connected by a moulded band, leading to single-storey porches and doorways that feature plate-glass overlights and six-panel doors. The windows are fitted with architraves, with 6/6-pane sashes on the first floor, 3/6-pane sashes on the second floor, and 3/3-pane sashes in the attic.

The rear elevation has a four-window range, with a banded ashlar ground floor and quoins above, as well as a party wall strip. It also features overhanging eaves and a pair of tall central parapeted half dormers, with architraves around the 6/6-pane sashes. The first-floor balconies are adorned with moulded cast-iron railings and brackets, while the ground floor has cast-iron lattice basket balconies.

The houses have attached front basement area railings made of spear-headed cast iron. They form part of a quasi-terrace of four linked semi-detached pairs, situated between the more composed terrace of Nos 8-25 and the detached pairs on the west side of the square, all designed by Underwood. The interior has not been inspected.
