Description

A pair of attached houses, numbers 32 and 33, dating from circa 1847 and designed by Charles Underwood. The houses are rendered with limestone dressings, featuring party wall stacks and a slate hipped roof. They follow a double-depth plan and are built in a Neoclassical style. Each house has four storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a two-window frontage. The front is nearly symmetrical, with shallow projecting wings incorporating clasping pilaster strips and a deep frieze band, set against boxed overhanging eaves. The wings have ground-floor pilasters that reach to a moulded band, connecting with single-storey porches. The porch to number 32 is set back and extends across to number 31. These porches have plate-glass overlights and six-panel doors. Number 33 features a 3/6-pane sash to the right of its doorway. Upper windows have architraves framing 6/6-pane sashes, while the third floor windows are 3/6-pane. A dormer is present on number 32. The rear elevation is characterized by two wide, raised sections where the windows are set, with an ashlar ground floor and a string below the eaves. Ground-floor windows are tripartite, with pilaster jambs and an entablature. The first floor windows have architraves, the second floor has raised surrounds and cornices, and the windows generally feature 6/6-pane sashes. Two 20th-century dormers are visible. First-floor balconies are adorned with moulded cast-iron railings and brackets. The interior was not inspected. Attached cast-iron railings with spearheads enclose the front basement area. A wrought-iron lamp is attached to the outer corner of number 33, near the doorway. These houses are part of a group of four semi-detached pairs, located between a composed terrace and the detached pairs on the west side of the square, all designed by Underwood.
