Description

Number 114 is a house dating from around 1770, located on Whitehall Road in Bristol. The building is roughcast with limestone dressings, features brick lateral stacks, and has a pantile roof. It has a single-depth plan and stands three storeys high with a three-window range. The front is symmetrical, with two-storey wings and a central 20th-century porch supported by Doric columns and topped with a pediment. The door has six fielded panels and a rectangular overlight.

On either side of the porch are canted two-storey bays, each containing 6/6 pane sashes in flush boxes, with wrought-iron railings above. The middle windows feature three stepped voussoirs above the 6/6 pane sashes, while the second-floor windows have five stepped voussoirs and 3/6 pane sashes. The wings have plate-glass sashes. There is a canted oriel on the left return, which has a 6/6 sash, an apron below, and a parapet above.

At the rear, there are 19th-century extensions. Inside, the house has a central hall and a dogleg stair, with panelled wainscot and similar panelling in the front rooms, along with some surviving panelled shutters. The entrance features rusticated piers with gabled caps and steps leading up to the garden doorway, which has stone piers and a heavy panelled lintel. The quality of the entrance has been diminished by the loss of details such as pineapple finials.
