Description

The former convent at the rear of the Parkside Hotel, built between 1850 and 1851 by Foster and Sons, is now a hotel. It was originally constructed as an extension to Arno's Court for the Sisterhood of the Asylum of the Good Shepherd. The building features pennant rubble with Bath stone dressings and a slate roof, designed in an Italianate style. It has a north-facing block with a cloister and chapel that adjoins the rear of the Parkside Hotel. The structure is three storeys high with an attic, displaying a three-window range on the north elevation and a two-window range on the east, framed by clasping pilasters. The windows have keyed, segmental heads and wide, flat surrounds, with string courses extending from the cills and above the heads. A heavy coved cornice runs beneath the attic storey, and tall chimneys with bracketed cornices are present.

The entrance to the cloister is located to the left and set back from the main front; it was originally two storeys tall. This entrance features ashlar and rubble stripes, a wide round arch on moulded springers, and banded jambs with a wooden door, accompanied by a tall screen wall to the left beside Bath Road. Inside, the cloister is open on two sides. The chapel's exterior showcases three tall pointed windows and an attached column with a carved capital and plinth at the right-hand corner.

Inside, the chapel, now a snooker room, contains three marble columns at the east end with Corinthian capitals and round arches. The ceiling is divided into large panels by moulded beams that curve down to rest on corbels at the sides. A later addition in a plainer style extends along the west side, facing the Parkside Hotel.
