Description
North Parade Bridge is a bridge built between 1835 and 1836, which opened on November 10, 1836. The arch was rebuilt in 1936-1937. It was designed by William Tierney Clark and constructed by David Aust, with the rebuilding carried out by F.R. Sisson, as noted on a plaque on the bridge parapet. The original structure featured cast iron arch ribs, a deck, and a parapet, all situated between rusticated ashlar abutments. The span was entirely rebuilt in ashlar in 1936.
This single span bridge includes side arches and an approach causeway on the east. The footpath arches feature console keystones and main piers that rise to a cornice, supported by console brackets, which are original elements. The stonework is heavily rusticated, while the 1936 arch is made of smooth ashlar, with rustication only on the arch itself and a smooth soffit. The parapet is balustraded throughout, and the abutment piers rise in further rusticated work, supporting openwork iron standards with lanterns. This 1936 work continues the similar treatment on the balustrade of the retaining wall to North Parade and Grand Parade.
