Description
Delia's Grotto is a garden arbour located in the garden of No. 14 North Parade. It dates from the early 18th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The structure is made of limestone and features an archway constructed from vermiculated stone, with smooth bases and imposts, and a pedimented head that includes a base for a vase. The side and rear walls are blocked.
This garden feature is reminiscent of the style of William Kent and may have been built before the houses on North Parade. A similar structure is depicted in the Buck panoramic view of Bath from 1734, which shows it as part of Harrison's Walks, a pleasure ground alongside the River Avon associated with Harrison's Rooms. Delia's Grotto is believed to be the site where Richard Sheridan composed verses to Elizabeth Linley prior to their elopement.
