Description
Nos. 5-8 Northumberland Place are early 19th-century shops with accommodation above. They are constructed from limestone ashlar, which is now painted, and the roofs are not visible. The buildings have a single depth plan, backing onto Nos. 15-18 The Corridor, and some have been physically joined with these.
The exterior features two storeys, with each building having one window. The upper floor has early 19th-century eight-over-eight sash windows. Each shopfront is distinct; No. 5 has a reproduction small-paned bow and a leaded fanlight, while Nos. 6 and 7 have square bays on brackets, dating from around 1830, with glazing bars. No. 8 also has a square bay on brackets, consisting of four panes with vertical glazing bars only. The shop windows and doors have reeded jambs and lintels adorned with lion mask paterae at the angles. The buildings feature a cornice, a parapet, and tall stacks with pots.
Although the interiors were not inspected, the buildings are modest when viewed individually but create a unified and charming group. A notable feature at the east end is the archway into High Street, which is topped by the pedimented rear elevation of No. 21 High Street. Northumberland Place was built on the site of a medieval close known as Marchant's Court, which is depicted on Gilmore's map from 1694.
