Description
This is a house, built after 1819, likely by GP Manners. It is constructed with limestone ashlar to the front and rear, with a double-pitched, parapeted roof. The front has double Roman-style chimneys, now truncated, while the rear has ashlar stacks and a concrete tile roof. The building is double-pile and has a staircase to the rear.
The exterior is of two storeys and a basement, with a two-window front. The first floor has an eight/eight-pane sash window in a plain reveal with a stone sill on the left, and a similar six/six-pane sash on the right. The ground floor mirrors this with an eight/eight-pane sash window to the left, and a six-panel door with reeded and fielded panels, voided corners, and a plate glass fanlight in a round-headed reveal to the right. The basement has a ten-pane upper sash, blocked below, in a splayed reveal, with glass blocks in the opening in the pavement. The front features a plinth, a moulded eaves cornice, and a coped parapet. The rear elevation contains glazing bar sashes and a double half-dormer.
The interior has not been inspected. Northampton Street and the surrounding development began around 1791, designed by Thomas Baldwin as a trustee for William Pulteney. Construction continued from 1794 after bankruptcy of the principal contractors, using plans and elevations on leases signed by Thomas Chantry and John Pinch. The street was completed after 1819, with plans and elevations on leases signed by GP Manners. The area suffered bomb damage in 1942, which significantly impacted the lower part of the street.
