Shops with accommodation over. Early C19. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar with roofs hidden from street. PLAN: Single depth plan and narrow frontage. EXTERIOR: Two storeys plus full attic. Nos 15-19 have paired window on first floor. Nos 13 and 14 have triple window, and have two singles on second floor, Nos 15-19 have one only. Mixture of six/six, two/two and plain sashes. Early C19 timber shopfront to No.16. Late C19 timber shopfronts to No.14 (1881, by J Bladwell, Builder). No.15 (1888, by B Smith, Builder) Nos 18 and 19, all have timber shopfronts. Late C19 (with window of 1921) public house front to No.17 `Coeur-de-Lion', with panelled pilasters and console bracketed fascia. Weathered string at attic floor level, cornice, parapet. INTERIORS: Not inspected except ground floor of No.17, which has damaged early C19 staircase with turned balusters. HISTORY: Northumberland Place was built on a medieval close, Marchant's Court, as is clearly shown in Gilmore's map of 1694. The buildings are individually modest, but together have unity and group value. A particularly charming terminal feature at the east end is the archway into High Street, with, above it, the pedimented rear elevation of No.21 High Street (qv). SOURCES: G. Finch, Shopfront Record (1992).
