Description

Nos. 13-19 Northumberland Place are early 19th-century shops with accommodation above. They are constructed from limestone ashlar, and their roofs are hidden from view. The buildings are two storeys tall with a full attic and feature a single depth plan and narrow frontages.

On the exterior, Nos. 15-19 have paired windows on the first floor, while Nos. 13 and 14 have a triple window and two single windows on the second floor. The windows are a mix of six-over-six, two-over-two, and plain sashes. No. 16 has an early 19th-century timber shopfront, while late 19th-century timber shopfronts are present at No. 14 (built in 1881 by J Bladwell) and No. 15 (built in 1888 by B Smith). Nos. 18 and 19 also feature timber shopfronts. No. 17, known as the public house 'Coeur-de-Lion', has a late 19th-century front with panelled pilasters and a console bracketed fascia, along with a window dating from 1921. The buildings have a weathered string at attic floor level, a cornice, and a parapet.

The interiors were not inspected, except for the ground floor of No. 17, which has a damaged early 19th-century staircase with turned balusters. Historically, Northumberland Place was built on a medieval close called Marchant's Court, as indicated on Gilmore's map from 1694. While each building is individually modest, they collectively exhibit unity and group value. A notable feature at the eastern end is the archway leading into High Street, above which is the pedimented rear elevation of No. 21 High Street.
