Description

No. 9 St James's Street is a house that has been converted into flats, built around 1790-1793 by John Palmer. The front is made of limestone ashlar, painted at the ground floor, while the rear features a mix of ashlar and rubble. The roof is a double pile with artificial slate, topped by two rebuilt brick stacks on the right, with early clay pots at the rear.

The building is three stories high and has a single bay with three windows. The first floor displays three grouped windows: a four/four sash, a six/six sash, and another four/four sash, all with crown glass set in splayed reveals. The second floor has three similar windows with plain reveals, window guards, and a continuous stone sill. On the ground floor, to the right, there are two six/six sashes in splayed reveals with a continuous stone sill. To the left, there is a six-panel door featuring beaded and fielded panels, a cast iron lion's mask knocker, a pennant step, and a fanlight in a round-headed plain reveal. The building has a plinth and a band course over the ground floor that continues with No. 10 St James's Street. There is also a sill band on the first floor and a moulded eaves cornice with a coped parapet that connects with Nos. 10 and 11 St James's Street. The rear elevation is partially visible, showing two six/six sashes on the first floor and two two/two sashes on the second floor.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this building is part of the unfinished St James's Square development, situated on land leased by Fielder, King, Hewlett, and Broom from Sir Peter Rivers Gay on March 25, 1790. St James's Street is one of four diagonal approaches to St James's Square, demonstrating the application of Picturesque principles in town planning.
