Description
The piers, railings, and plinths located to the south of the Municipal Golf Course date from the mid to late 19th century, possibly around 1879 when High Common was acquired by Bath Corporation. Constructed from Bath stone, the piers feature wrought iron railings and ashlar plinths. The structure extends approximately 400 meters and includes spear-headed railings on a low wall that forms the plinth, which is accentuated by square section piers that stand about 3 meters high. These piers have a cornice band and a coved cornice just above the upper rail. The caps of the piers are steeply gabled, with plain fronts framed by projecting edges of side panels that roll over into a scroll at the top, decorated with rows of overlapping laurel leaves arranged in a fish-scale pattern on the slopes. Each pier features a circular panel on the front, with the upper half recessed into the cornice band and the lower part having a raised surround. Some of the panels have raised Gothic letters E, H, or R carved in the center. Towards the west end, there are double gates, and the railings terminate at a simpler pier. This impressive collection of railings is designed in a High Gothic style, contrasting sharply with the architecture of Victoria Park and the surrounding area, reflecting the official tastes of High Victorian Bath.
