Description
This is a late 18th century house, completed in 1791, built by John George and Henry Street as part of the St James's Place development, south-east of St James's Square. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar to the front, with scored render and ashlar quoins to the left side. The roof is a mansard with concrete tiles, and a brick wall to the left includes a gable and stack. The house has a double-fronted, single-depth plan. The front has three bays and three storeys plus an attic. The first floor features three six/six sash windows in plain reveals with stone sills, as does the second floor. The ground floor has two similar windows with cast iron window box fronts. The doorway has six flush panels, a 19th-century cast iron knocker, a three-pane overlight, and a 20th-century timber hood in a beaded reveal. There are two dormers with plate glass, horned sashes. The exterior details include a band course above the ground floor, a moulded eaves cornice, and a coped parapet. A Sun Fire Insurance plate is attached above the ground floor window on the left. The right side has an unfinished edge indicating where the now-demolished No.5 St James’s Place formerly stood. The left side has a six-pane fixed light window with a single opening pane to the ground floor. The interior has not been inspected. The property was built on land leased in 1790, and the under-leases for Nos.4, 5, and 6 were granted in 1791 for 96 years. Only No.6, and parts of Nos.1 and 2, remain of the original six houses.
