Description

Byland House is a two-storey building with an attic, partly three storeys, constructed in the Italianate villa style. Built from limestone ashlar and topped with a Welsh slate roof, it features a half H-plan layout with projecting rear wings and a central stair-hall. There is an infill post-1866 that includes a two-storey half-height bathroom block.

The exterior showcases multiple hipped roofs with deep eaves supported by timber brackets. A central leaded gulley-roof is located on one side of the stair-hall, which has a triple-arched window in the gable, topped with a wrought iron weathervane. The building includes corniced stacks typical of the Italian villa style. Most windows are arched with keyed heads, some are paired, and they consist of plain, two-over-two, and margin glazed sashes and casements. The north elevation is stepped up in three blocks, each with a separate roof. The rear (east) elevation has two projecting wings; the southern wing features a circa 1953 single-storey extension with an entrance, while the original roof is capped by a triple shafted stack. The northern wing is blind and has a tall stack above it. The west elevation includes a small early 20th-century extension at the east end and a corbelled stone balcony at the first floor. The south elevation has a similar stone balcony and an additional wrought iron balcony. The front entrance was altered around 1953 to accommodate the bathroom extension, and a sculpted scroll stone displays the name and date. The interior has not been inspected.
