Description

No. 8 Trim Street is a house in a row that has been converted into commercial premises. It dates from the mid to late 18th century and may have replaced an earlier building. The structure is made of limestone ashlar, and the roof is not visible.

The building is small and located at a re-entrant angle where Trim Street turns at a right angle to the south. It stands three storeys high, featuring sash windows with plain reveals. The narrow frontage, which is adjacent to No. 7, includes a second floor with a nine-pane window and two small lights, above two deep fifteen-pane windows. The ground floor has a large plain sash window with a grille and a panelled door to the right, topped with a deep transom light.

On the return front, there is a nine-pane window above three deep twelve-pane windows, with small nine-pane fixed lights at the ground floor flanking a wide pair of panelled doors under a radial fanlight, all set within a plain surround. The two lower floors are painted, and there is a platband above the first floor. The upper wall, likely added later, features a simple parapet.

The street was laid out in 1707 on land owned by George Trim and represents a significant expansion of the city beyond its medieval walls. Trim Street retains its flagged pavements and sett-covered roadway.
