Description
Highbrook War Memorial stands in the churchyard of All Saint’s Church in Highbrook, West Sussex. Built of Clipsham limestone, it commemorates those lost in both World Wars. The memorial consists of a lantern cross, featuring carved decorative tracery and an IHS in raised lettering on one face, with a carved picture of Christ on the other. It rises from a slender, octagonal shaft that tapers as it ascends, and is set upon a hexagonal plinth, which in turn rests on a two-stepped hexagonal base. An inscription is incised into three sides of the plinth, and the remaining faces are inscribed with the names of the fallen. The inscription for the Great War (1914-1919) reads: "REMEMBER YE WITH/ THANKSGIVING AND/ HONOUR BEFORE GOD/ AND MAY THESE MEN/ OF HIGHBROOK WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR/ KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ MAY THEY REST IN PEACE." A separate inscription commemorates those who died in the Second World War (1939-1945) and includes spaces for names.
