Description

Brookhill Cottage is a former estate lodge, now a private house, built in the early to mid 19th century in the Tudor Gothic style. The building is constructed from West Hoathly sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, set in lime mortar, and features a slate roof with brick chimneystacks. It has a T-shaped plan, consisting of one storey and attics, with two windows on the front and one on each side. Each floor includes one room on either side of the central stairs, along with a room at the rear of the stairs.

The front elevation showcases a central gabled porch with a four-centred arch and intricate fretted wooden bargeboards, along with a plank front door. Gabled dormers also feature similar bargeboards, and the gables on the side elevations have fretted bargeboards as well. The rear elevation has a central gable with a casement window, a lean-to external lavatory to the right, and a later brick lean-to to the left. In 2004, a modern full-width single-storey conservatory was added to the rear. The cottage retains its original metal-framed casement windows with rectangular lights and has a gabled roof with a central pair of brick chimneystacks on stepped bases.

Inside, the cottage has a simple interior with a central straight flight of stairs and retains most of its original plank doors and cupboards. Brookhill Cottage is of special interest as a little-altered estate lodge in a picturesque style and has significant group value with Brookhill House.
