Description
Holy Innocents Church is a church built in 1848-1849, designed by architect W. Harrison, with a vestry added in 1909. It is constructed from Forest sandstone and Horsham stone rubble, featuring ashlar dressings, a tiled roof, and a wooden and shingled bellcote. The church is designed in the Decorated style and includes a nave, a north aisle, north and south transepts, and a south porch.
The nave has two traceried windows, one with double lights and the other with triple trefoliated lights. The gabled south porch features kneelers, a scissorbrace roof, and two stained glass lancet windows. The north aisle contains three double trefoliated windows, while the west window has two cinquefoil-headed lights with a quatrefoil above. The wooden bellcote at the west end has a trefoliated bell chamber with a latticed screen and a shingled spire topped with a metal windvane. The transepts are gabled, and the east window consists of three cinquefoil-headed lights with reticulated tracery.
Inside, there is a three-bay arcade supported by octagonal columns, and both the nave and north aisle have arch-braced roofs. The church features 19th-century pews and an organ from Worth Abbey, installed in 1880. The south and east walls are adorned with 19th-century stained glass, while the north aisle has six stained glass windows from 1986, created by Harold Thompson, depicting the history of Christ's Hospital.
