Description
The Chequers Inn Public House is a public house that dates from the late 16th century or earlier. It features a timber-framed structure that was refronted in the early 19th century and partially refenestrated in the 20th century. The frame is clad in painted brick and topped with an old tiled roof, which has a large external brick chimneystack on the right side and a smaller one on the left. The building has two storeys and two windows, with a gabled crosswing on the right. The right bay includes a triple casement window with a cambered head on the ground floor, while the left side has a 16-pane early 19th-century sash window on the first floor and a 20-pane early 19th-century sash window on the ground floor. There is a 20th-century half-glazed door, and a 20th-century hall to the right that is not of special interest.
Inside, the right side bar features a chamfered axial beam with run-out stops, exposed floor joists, and an open fireplace with a wooden bressumer on the side wall, along with a flagstone floor. The left side bar has old floorboards and chamfered beams, and the first floor also retains old floorboards.
