Description
Knepp Castle is a castellated Gothic mansion built by Sir Charles Merrick Burrell between 1800 and 1813, designed by architect John Nash with Alexander Kyffin as Clerk of the Works. The building has an L-shaped plan, consisting of two storeys and an attic, and features eleven windows. It is faced with Roman cement and has a tiled roof. The square-headed sash windows have obtusely pointed panes, glazing bars, and dripstones above. A large round tower, which contains the staircase, is located at the centre of the north-east front. The south-west front showcases a series of machicolated turrets and a stone porch at the centre. There is a later addition made after 1830 at the north-west end. Adjacent to the castle is the stable courtyard, where the inner facade is faced with red brick and grey headers, topped with a castellated parapet. The south side of the courtyard consists of two blocks of windows, one with two windows and the other with four, separated by a gate-post topped with eagles.
