Description
The Cottage is a house that likely dates back to the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th century and additions in the 18th century. It features red brick, timber framing, tile-hanging, and a tile roof. The original section to the south consists of three bays, with two bays differing in date from the third and being structurally distinct. The heavy framing includes straight down braces. The house has two storeys, with the lower storey on one side built in brick. On the first floor, there are two diagonal-mullion unglazed windows on each side, located in the first and third bays on the north side, and in the second and third bays on the south side. The internal frames are strong, with down braces and queen struts supporting the roof. The ceiling beams and bressumer of a substantial gable stack, which is an early addition, feature shield-shaped stops. At the east end, there is a later addition of two bays that forms a cross wing, constructed with timber of lesser scantling and featuring cambered-headed windows.
