Description
Eastergate Memorial is a war memorial constructed around 1920, designed by sculptor Morris Harding RBS. It is a catafalque type structure made of solid stone blocks, standing six courses high. The top course is shaped to resemble a mound, upon which a full-sized lion sits. Below the lion's paws is a carved wreath that encircles the inscription "FOR VALOUR," rendered in an Art Nouveau style. On the front face of the cenotaph, there is an eleven-line inscription in bold, well-spaced capitals that defines the memorial's purpose. Names of the fallen are carved around the base. The handling of the lion's tail at the rear creates a remarkably realistic effect. The entire structure is a dignified piece of symbolism, somewhat reminiscent of the works of Sir Edwin Lutyens, and is highly original in concept and imaginatively sited. Additions have been made to commemorate those who served in the Second World War.
