Description
The Marshall Monument is a chest tomb dating from around 1820, located approximately 14 metres north-north-east of the north-east corner of the chapel at the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Godalming. It is constructed from ashlar stone and designed in a Neo-Classical style. The tomb features a roll-moulded base stone on a podium and a plinth. Attached Tuscan columns support an entablature that has segmental pediments on each side, which include fan motifs in the tympana. Between the columns are pulvinated panels, with two on each of the longer sides and one on each of the shorter sides, bearing commemorative inscriptions. The west side commemorates Sarah, the wife of Robert Marshall, who died in 1819, and Robert Marshall, who died in 181(?). The south side honors their son, Frederick, who died in 1820. The inscriptions are worn, and the monument is partially obscured by ivy, making it not fully visible at the time of the survey.
