Description

Roaring House Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the 17th century, with enlargements and alterations made in the 18th century and further additions in the 20th century. It is constructed of handmade red brick in random bond, featuring some exposed timber-framing and knapped flint, topped with a red tile roof and brick chimneys.

The building has a rectangular, single-depth plan aligned on a north-south axis. The original 17th-century section is at the right-hand (south) end and consists of two units, while a single-unit addition is to the left, along with a further 20th-century addition. All parts are two stories high. The earliest section has two bays and features a doorway that is offset to the right of center, with a board door set in a wooden doorcase, protected by a small brick and timber porch with a pitched roof. There are two 2-light casement windows on each floor, with the second window on the first floor displaced to the left, above the porch. A very large external chimney stack is located at the right-hand gable, accompanied by a low front wall made of flint and a long tiled offset.

The earlier addition to the left of a staggered vertical joint has two similar windows at ground level and one above, with a chimney positioned behind the ridge at the former left gable. The right-hand gable wall, which is not covered by the chimney, displays exposed timber framing on the first floor. The rear of the building features a full-height outshut attached to the end bay of the 17th-century portion, with exposed sill, wall-post, wall-plate, and rails in the next bay. In the center, there are two flint panels with brick lozenges and some 2-light casements. The interior has not been inspected.
