Description
The Grotto, located approximately 170 metres southeast of The Durdans, is a structure likely dating from the early 18th century. It is made of earth-covered brick and flint and is set within a mound. A round archway provides access to the domed interior of the grotto, which features arched, coved niches for statues. Celia Fiennes described a grotto at Durdans around 1712, noting "an arch entirely dark, but at the entrance it is so large as 6 arched seats, and between carved stone very fine of all sorts of flowers, figures, fruits, the pillars or peers pretty broad."
