Description
The Bell Inn is a building that was originally a house, later divided into cottages, a shop, and a public house, and is now an inn. It dates from the mid-17th century and was remodeled and extended in the late 18th century, with early 19th-century additions. The structure is made of painted uncoursed limestone rubble and has a slate roof. The earliest part of the building is at the center, with the eaves raised and extended to the right in the late 18th century, and a further addition to the left in the early 19th century.
The building is two storeys high. The center section features three 19th-century casements on each floor, with two on each floor in the 18th-century addition and one on each floor in the 19th-century addition. Most of these windows have three lights, except for the center window on the ground floor and those on the first floor of the center section, which have two lights. The first-floor windows are positioned directly below the eaves. There are ledged doors at the far left and far right of the 18th-century and 19th-century additions, respectively, with the former having a flat bracketed hood.
The building has integral end stacks in the 17th-century part, with shafts that have been rebuilt in artificial stone. Inside, the ground-floor room of the 17th-century section, which was probably formerly two rooms, features a chamfered spine beam and exposed joists, along with a stone-flag floor. The building is included for its group value.
