Description
Numbers 5 to 7 and The Playhouse, along with Numbers 11 to 23 on Beaumont Street, were laid out as a unified terrace-type scheme between 1828 and 1837 on the site of the ancient palace of Beaumont. The buildings feature five-storey Bath stone fronts on brick, with cellars, a moulded cornice, and a small parapet. Some of the buildings have a mansard roof that creates an attic floor. Each floor typically has two to three sash windows with glazing bars, and most of the first-floor windows have iron balconies, while some, such as Numbers 34 and 35, include attractive verandah balconies. The doorways have semi-circular heads, and many, particularly on the south side, are framed with stone door frames that include engaged columns and split pediments. The Playhouse, located on the site of Numbers 8, 9, and 10, was constructed in 1938 and is designed to harmonize with the surrounding buildings, using Clipsham ashlar. The interiors of the buildings show that the fireplaces are positioned on the side walls, as the central chimney stack has been removed. The Playhouse underwent alterations in 1964. All the listed buildings on Beaumont Street form a cohesive group.
