Description
The terrace walls and sunken lane around the south and east sides of Somerhill were built around 1879. They are made of local sandstone ashlar. The terraced garden lawns on these sides of the main block of Somerhill are supported by stone ashlar walls that rise as short parapet walls with plain flat coping and feature square terminal posts. The eastern wall extends northward, ending at a contemporary sunken service lane that runs along the northern side. This lane is deep and narrow, with battered walls. A pedestrian bridge spans the lane, featuring walls on each side that match the style of the terrace wall parapets. The bridge connects the house side of the walled gardens to the north.
