Description

This is a barn located approximately 5 meters north of Tatlingbury Farmhouse, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. The north end was repaired after a fire around 1985. It has low brick footings, mostly covered with 20th-century cement, and features a weatherboarded timber frame with a peg-tile roof. The barn includes outshots made of red brick in either English or Flemish bond.

The barn is designed as a large threshing barn oriented roughly north-south, with central large opposing doorways leading onto the threshing floor. The eastern side has an aisle and a full-height porch, while there is a secondary cartshed at the south end and a lean-to outshot on the north end of the west side.

On the exterior, the west side has 20th-century double doors, and the tall roof is half-hipped at both ends. The eaves on the left extend over the secondary outshot. The east side features a roof that extends over the aisle, with the porch rising above it, topped with its own hipped roof.

Inside, the barn has five bays open to the roof. The wall posts have jowls, with straight arch braces supporting the tie beams. It features staggered butt purlins and raking struts. Most of the carpentry that survived the fire is well-preserved, and the replaced sections, primarily in the northern bay, were done expertly using pegged mortise-and-tenon joints.

This barn is part of a notable group with the medieval Tatlingbury Farmhouse and its oasthouse.
