Description
The Headmaster's House and The Skinners’ School Library form part of Tonbridge School and represent the earliest buildings on the site. The Library was originally built in 1760 and extended in 1826. The Headmaster’s House was constructed in 1864, and together they create the south side of the School courtyard, which is partially open on its east side.
The west half of the range appears as an 18th-century house that was Gothicised in the early 19th century. It is two storeys and has an attic, with six windows and two dormers visible from the front. The facade is faced with cement and features a castellated parapet. The windows are casement windows with diamond-shaped panes, and buttresses are positioned beside them. The roof is tiled.
The east half of the range is a mid-19th-century Gothic building, consisting of a central section and two slightly projecting gabled wings. It is two storeys high and has an attic in the west gable, with four windows visible from the front. The exterior is of sandstone ashlar, with a castellated parapet between the gable storey. The roof is tiled. There are two-bay windows on the ground floor, and a gabled porch sits between them, with a stone facing above the doorway recording the foundation of the school in 1553. The windows above are of various shapes. A gable faces the east front, and an oriel window is located below it.
