Description

The Shipwrights Arms is a public house that dates from the 18th century or earlier, with alterations and extensions made in the early and late 19th century. It features a timber frame, weatherboarding, and sections clad in painted brick, topped with plain tiled roofs. The building consists of two parallel ranges and an additional wing to the east. It is two storeys high with a hipped roof, and has stacks located at the rear centre and to the right. The first floor has two wooden casements, while the ground floor has three irregularly placed wooden and metal casements, along with central double half-glazed doors. The left-hand extension is also two storeys tall, featuring a stack at the end right and a metal casement on the ground floor, plus a single-storey extension to the left return with casements and a picture window above. The rear elevation is similarly two storeys with a hipped roof, wooden casements on the first floor, and a single-storey extension on the ground floor that includes casements and a boarded door. Inside, the building clearly displays its two main construction periods, with the rear range being the older part, featuring exposed brick fireplaces. The Shipwrights Arms is situated prominently on the marshes at the confluence of the Faversham and Oare Creeks (Hollowshore), giving it a landscape value that exceeds what might be expected for a modest building. It continues to support boat repair and mooring activities, serving the purpose for which it was originally built.
