Description

The Square numbers 1-8 consist of 18th-century almshouses or workhouse cottages, later restored in the late 20th century. The buildings are timber framed with painted brick infill on a painted brick ground floor, and feature tile hung outer facades. They have a plain tiled roof. The arrangement follows a ground plan of three sides of a square courtyard. Each wing is two storeys high and has a hipped roof, featuring three stacks. The side wings have regular fenestration with six horizontally sliding sash windows on each floor. The central range has five windows on the first floor and three on the ground floor. There are three boarded doors to each wing and two to the central range.
