Description

Springhill, originally Fordcombe Manor House, is a restored farmhouse dating back to the 16th century, with a significant addition of a gabled wing in the early 17th century. The front elevation, on the right-hand side, is three storeys high and features a deep stone plinth. The ground floor has a flat brick octagonal bay with wooden mullions and transoms. Small windows are positioned either side of the bay. The first floor has an oversailing bay window, also with restored mullions and transoms, supported by carved wooden brackets, along with small windows on either side. The attic storey is also oversailing and supported by carved brackets, incorporating a moulded tie beam dated 1622 (W A L). The gable end features ornamental carved bargeboards with a central carved wooden pendant at the top, and a central attic window. The entire gable end is plastered. The left-hand side of the front elevation is constructed of stone with tile hanging above. It includes a recessed front door with an original panelled inner door, accessed by 12 stone steps. Diamond-paned windows are found throughout the house. The tiled roof is hipped on the left side, and a stone terrace is located three steps up from the front. Springhill is part of a group with two barns located to the north and west.
