Description

Two K6 telephone kiosks are located outside the Old Town Hall in Gravesend. These kiosks are made of cast iron and are painted red, featuring long horizontal glazing in the doors and sides. The crowns on the top panels are applied rather than perforated. Each kiosk has rectangular white display signs that read "TELEPHONE" beneath a shallow curved roof. The internal equipment of the kiosks has been modernised.

The kiosks are in good condition and are positioned near the Grade II* listed Old Town Hall. One kiosk is situated to the far right of the front elevation, serving as a focal point that terminates the view east along Jury Street, while the other is located under the portico of the Old Town Hall.

The K6 telephone kiosk is a significant example of 20th-century industrial design, created by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee. This design evolved from Scott's earlier K2 telephone kiosk of 1924, which was inspired by Neo-classical architecture. The K6 is more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective for mass production. Scott, an influential modern British architect, is known for notable works such as the Anglican cathedral of Liverpool and Battersea power station. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were produced, although many were replaced in the 1960s by simpler designs. Nonetheless, the K6 remains an iconic feature of British streetscapes.

The K6 telephone kiosks outside the Old Town Hall are listed for their strong group value with the Old Town Hall and the nearby numbers 55-59 High Street.
