Description

This is a headstone dedicated to James and Mary Ireland, located about 4 metres south of the tower of the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Elham. It dates from the mid-18th century and is made of stone. The headstone features an undulating top that is carved with three small skulls and two larger skulls, surrounded by foliage. There are twin inscription panels; the left side commemorates James Ireland, who died in 1763, while the right side is dedicated to Mary Ireland, who died in 1733.
