Description
The churchyard wall and gates surrounding the Church of St. Mary are from the 18th century and earlier. The wall is made of flint with red brick upper courses and coping, standing approximately 5 feet high. It extends about 15 feet to the left of the double gates, which feature spear-headed uprights, sweeping transom rails, a single rail overthrow, and a lamp with a finial top. To the right, there is a timber gate with a horizontal timber rail across the lower middle, a diagonal timber rail across the upper half, and inset spear-headed uprights. The wall runs about 35 yards in length and has a dogtooth cornice to the coping, returning to the north and east of the church, forming the churchyard wall. The sections to the north and east include rubble remains dating back to at least the 14th century, which are associated with the Archiepiscopal palace located to the north of the church, known as Eastry Court.
