Description
The Church of St Michael began as a Chapel of Ease to Sutton-at-Hone during the medieval period. It has pre-Conquest origins, with some mediaeval remains, and was largely restored in the 19th century. The exterior is a mix of pebbledash and stone facing, with a tiled roof. The tower is part weatherboarded and topped with a broached shingled spire. The church comprises a chancel with north and south chapels, a nave with north and south aisles, and a west tower. The tower retains two Saxon windows. The west end of the nave is of mediaeval construction. The north aisle was rebuilt by E Cresy in 1839. Ewan Christian rebuilt the chancel in 1884. R Merchant rebuilt the nave and south aisle between 1909 and 1922, incorporating Arts and Crafts details. A porch was added under the west tower in 1909. The interior features a pulpit dated 1655, the Royal Arms of George II, and a carved chancel screen made in 1920.
