Description
The Whitstable War Memorial was constructed in 1920, designed by F G Browning. It is a group value memorial, built from white marble on a grey granite base, with York stone steps and marble panels. The memorial comprises a white marble Latin cross set atop an octagonal lantern featuring niches on each face. The cross sits upon an octagonal red granite shaft, which rises from a square grey granite plinth with gabled tops, all set on a three-stepped base. The front gable displays a carved wreath with a ribbon, and the remaining three gables bear the inscription “IN MEMORIAM”. A dark grey granite band of plaques is positioned below the gable, inscribed with names. Four marble plaques are set into the granite plinth on each side, below the dark grey granite band. The front plaque features a carved wreath and ribbon; within the wreath, in leaded lettering, are the words “OUR GLORIOUS DEAD / THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918,” with “OFFICERS” inscribed on the ribbon. The other plaques list the names of those who fell. A red granite scroll on the front steps reads "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THOSE OF OUR PEOPLE WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE 1939 – 1945”. A dark granite band from the late 20th century, composed of four tablets, bears the names of those who died on active service since 1939.
