Description
The gatepier and wall located on the north side of Longport and the west side of North Holmes Road were built around 1808 as part of George Byfield's design for Canterbury Prison and the adjacent courthouse. The boundary wall stretches from the eastern side of 45 Longport to the junction with North Holmes Road, where it turns along the west side of North Holmes Road.
The materials used include a stone gate pier and brick walls constructed in both Flemish and English bond. At the western end, there is a projecting stone gate pier featuring a tall recessed panel, a narrower plain panel above it, and a flat cornice. The wall along Longport stands approximately nine feet high in Flemish bond and maintains a similar height along North Holmes Road until it reaches a point nearly opposite St. Martin's Church, where it rises to about 19 feet and transitions to English bond. Some patching is evident on the northern part of the wall.
