Description
The building is a water tower, constructed in 1903 for the Margate Corporation District Waterworks, designed in the Edwardian Italianate Revival style. It is a rectangular structure with two stages, made of red brick and terracotta, featuring an iron water tank. The lower stage includes pilasters with banded rustication and open arcading with round arches, each adorned with stone keystones and terracotta decoration above. There is a stone panel displaying the date and the name of the waterworks. The shorter sides have one arch, while the longer sides have three. A moulded stringcourse separates the two stages. The upper stage mirrors the lower but lacks the rustication and has a deep eaves cornice supported by brackets. This cornice holds a walkway, which is surrounded by decorative iron railings, encircling the panelled iron tank. The tank is inscribed with "Erected by Newton Chambers and Co, Thorncliffe Ironworks Sheffield 1903."
