Description
Troy Town House is a late 17th-century house located in Brook. It is constructed from red and blue brick and features a plain tiled roof. The building has a lobby entry and a three-unit plan, standing two storeys high on a raised plinth. It has a plat band and boxed eaves, with a central left chimney stack. The first floor includes three glazing bar sash windows and two wooden casements, while the ground floor has three tripartite wooden casements with segmental lintels. The entrance features a raised and fielded panelled door set in a moulded, pylon-shaped architrave with a segmental hood supported by brackets. At the rear, there is a continuous and integral catslide outshot. A short section of garden wall, approximately three feet high, extends about 20 metres from the left end of the house.
Inside, the timber work is made of Baltic pine, showcasing large moulded ceiling beams, joists, and a chimney bressumer. The interior also includes panelled and plank and mullion doors with fanlights. A fine dog-leg staircase in the hall features turned balusters and a flat moulded rail, rising through three flights. The attic bears the signature of Richard Cullen, dated 1744, although the house is likely around 100 years older. This building is a smaller and slightly later version of Naccolt Farmhouse, also in Brook, both preserving the late medieval three-unit plan while attempting some symmetry in the facade, and demonstrating an early and significant use of fittings and details, particularly the use of Baltic pine.
