Description
Elm Cottage and the attached bakehouse is a house and bakehouse that dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th and 17th centuries, and an extension added in the 19th century. The building is timber framed and clad with red brick, featuring tile hanging on the return elevations. Originally, it was a four-bay hall house, consisting of one storey and an attic on ragstone footings, which has since been extended to two storeys.
The roof is hipped with gablets, and it includes two hipped dormers, a large cluster of stacks to the left, and a projecting and offset stack to the right. The ground floor has three wooden casement windows, and there is one casement window on the left side of the first floor in the gabled extension. There are boarded doors located to the centre left and to the right. At the rear, there is a catslide outshot. The roof structure is sans purlin and shows signs of smoke blackening. Inside, there are large inglenooks and fitted cupboards, as well as a newel stair with enriched newels. The bakehouse at the rear is a single storey with a hipped roof and a central stack, along with attached store rooms.
