Description
Lossenham Manor is a house dating back to at least the 13th century, with significant development in the 17th and 18th centuries. A Carmelite Friars' house was originally founded on the site in 1241 by Sir Thomas Aliber or Fitz Ancher, and was dissolved in 1536. The present building comprises two parallel ranges. The rear range is timber-framed and was built by Sir John Colepepper in 1628, but was later refaced with red brick in the 18th century. The front range is mainly of the 18th century, with the easternmost window bay likely added in the early 19th century. The house is two storeys and attics, constructed of red brick on a stone base. It has four windows facing south. The easternmost bay has a parapet, while the remainder features a stone stringcourse and a brick eaves cornice, with molded wood detailing. The central bay projects, with a stone stringcourse above the first floor and a blunt gable of the 19th century containing two attic windows and a window space. There are gabled dormers on each side of this projecting bay. A Mansard tiled roof covers the building. The windows retain vertical glazing bars. A wide stone porch with Doric columns and a triglyph frieze gives access to the front. A red brick boundary wall runs along the south-east corner, at right angles to the house, with brick piers at each end and one in the centre, all surmounted by ball caps. The interior retains some 18th-century fireplaces, and one room has exposed stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, believed to be of early 17th-century date.
