Description
The Balloon School Memorial is located within the barrack area of the Airborne Forces Depot and the Regimental Headquarters of the Parachute Regiment in Aldershot. This memorial features a metal plaque mounted on a base, with the following inscription in raised lettering: "BALLOON SQUARE THE SCHOOL OF BALLOONING WHICH WAS THEN A BRANCH OF THE ROYAL ENGINEERS WAS FOUNDED IN 1892." This monument marks the site of the first interest in aerial warfare in Aldershot, which ultimately contributed to the establishment of the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough.
