Description

ALISON'S ROAD 1. 5238 Aldershot Balloon School Memorial within the barrack area of the Airborne Forces Depot and Regimental Head- quarters of the Parachute Regiment SU 85 SE 2/4 II 2. Memorial, comprising a metal plaque mounted on a base. The following inscription is in raised lettering:- BALLOON SQUARE THE SCHOOL OF BALLOONING WHICH WAS THEN A BRANCH OF THE ROYAL ENGINEERS WAS FOUNDED IN 1892. In effect, this monument records the site of the first interest in aerial warfare in Aldershot, which led to the eventual setting up of the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough.
