Description
The memorial is a stone drinking fountain erected in the 1930s to commemorate Captain Charles Claudius de la Poer Beresford, Royal Engineers. It consists of a four-stage stone monument: an arched pedestal on a block base supports an inscribed stone dedication, topped by an arch and pediment. The inscription reads: 'Near this spot on the 30th May 1910 Capt Charles Claudius de la Poer Beresford Royal Engineers was killed in a brave attempt to stop a runaway horse'.
Captain Charles Claudius de la Poer Beresford (1879-1910) served in the Royal Engineers, receiving the Queen South Africa Medal in 1899-1902 and rising to the rank of Captain in 1908. He died on 30th May 1910 while attempting to stop a runaway horse on what is now the A325, near the former Officers Stables at Albuhera Barracks. The memorial was erected shortly after 1934.
The memorial is notable for its historical interest in commemorating a heroic act at a time when horses were still important in the military. It is also of design interest as a robustly designed piece of street furniture.
